SGPA, CGPA & Percentage: Conversion Guide for Indian Universities

You open your semester result and see “SGPA: 8.2”. The job application form asks for “Aggregate Percentage (up to last semester)”. Now you’re stuck because different universities use different formulas — and applying the wrong one can lower your calculated percentage by 2‑3 points. This confusion costs students interview calls every placement season.

In this guide, I’ll break down SGPA, CGPA, and the exact conversion formulas used by VTU, Mumbai University, JNTU, SPPU, and others. You’ll also get a free, automatic calculator. If you want your percentage in 2 seconds, try our SGPA to Percentage Calculator — select your university, enter your SGPA, done.

What Is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of grade points earned in all subjects of a single semester. It’s calculated as: SGPA = Σ (Credit × Grade Point) / Σ Credits. For example, if you have 3 subjects with 4 credits each and you scored grades of 8, 9, 7, your SGPA = (4×8 + 4×9 + 4×7) / (4+4+4) = 96/12 = 8.0.

CGPA vs SGPA

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of SGPAs across all completed semesters. If your SGPAs over 4 semesters are 7.5, 8.0, 7.8, 8.2 and each semester has equal total credits, CGPA ≈ (7.5+8.0+7.8+8.2)/4 = 7.875.

Different universities mandate different multipliers. Here are the most common ones:

FAQ

1. Why do I get a different percentage when using different formulas?

Because each university sets its own conversion standard based on historical grading patterns. Using the wrong formula can under‑ or over‑estimate your percentage. Always use the one your university specifies.

2. Is SGPA to percentage conversion the same as CGPA to percentage?

Not always. Some universities have a separate formula for CGPA. For example, VTU uses the same formula for both, but Mumbai University uses CGPI × 7.1 + 11 for CGPA too.

3. Can I calculate percentage directly from marks?

If you have total marks obtained and maximum marks, percentage = (Obtained/Total) × 100. The calculator is for grade‑point systems.

4. Does the Toolzo calculator work for Anna University?

Currently it includes VTU, MU, JNTU, SPPU, and CBSE. We are adding more universities. You can still use the generic formula (SGPA × 10 – 0.75) as an approximation.
