7 Practical QR Code Uses in India: UPI, WhatsApp, Resume, Wedding Cards & More
You see QR codes on shop counters for UPI payments, on wedding cards that open a photo album, and on business cards that save a contact with one scan. Here is how to create each of these QR codes yourself, using a free browser tool that generates the image on your device. No link or phone number is ever sent to a server.
1. UPI payment QR code
A QR code for UPI lets someone scan and pay you directly via Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or any UPI app. You need your UPI ID, which looks like yourname@okhdfcbank or yourname@upi. In the QR code generator, enter the link in this format:
upi://pay?pa=yourupi@bank&pn=YourName
Replace "yourupi@bank" with your actual UPI ID and "YourName" with your name as you want it to appear. If you have a specific amount, add &am=100 at the end for a QR that pre‑fills a Rs 100 payment. The QR code never shares your UPI ID with the generator itself; the encoding happens on your phone. Print this QR on an invoice, a shop counter sign, or share it as an image.
2. WhatsApp chat QR code
A WhatsApp QR code opens a chat with you when someone scans it. This is useful on business cards, restaurant menus, and customer support signs. The link format is:
https://wa.me/9198XXXXXXXX
Use your full phone number with 91 (India's country code) and no plus sign or spaces. To pre‑fill a message like "Hi, I am interested in your services," add ?text=Hi%20I%20am%20interested to the end. Spaces in the message should be replaced with %20. Paste this complete link into the QR generator. When someone scans the code, WhatsApp opens directly to your chat, and the pre‑filled message appears in their text box.
3. Resume or portfolio QR code
A small QR code in the top corner of your resume can link to your LinkedIn profile, your online portfolio, or a PDF of your full CV. Use the direct URL: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yourname or a link to your portfolio site. Keep the URL short. If the link is long, use a URL shortener first, then feed the short link to the QR generator. A recruiter who scans the code with their phone camera lands on your profile in one tap, which is faster than typing a URL from a printed page.
4. Instagram or social media profile QR
An Instagram QR code opens your profile when scanned. The link is simply https://www.instagram.com/yourusername. Paste this into the generator. The same works for Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and any other social profile. This is useful on a printed banner at an event, on a product packaging card, or on a visiting card. One scan and the person is on your profile, ready to follow.
5. Wedding invitation QR code
Indian wedding cards increasingly include a QR code that opens a digital invite with photos, a Google Maps location of the venue, or an RSVP form. To make one, upload your digital invite to Google Drive or any hosting service, get a shareable link, and paste that link into the QR generator. Alternatively, use a Google Maps link to the venue so guests can navigate directly. Some couples also link to a shared photo album where guests can upload their photos from the event. The QR code prints clearly on a card and works as long as the link stays active.
6. Wi‑Fi QR code
A Wi‑Fi QR code lets a guest scan and connect to your network without typing the password. The format is:
WIFI:S:YourWiFiName;T:WPA;P:YourPassword;;
Replace "YourWiFiName" with the network name and "YourPassword" with the Wi‑Fi password. "WPA" is the security type; most home networks use WPA or WPA2. Paste this entire string into the QR generator. Print the QR code and stick it on your router or a guest room wall. When someone scans it, their phone asks if they want to join the network. This saves the "what's your Wi‑Fi password" question at every gathering.
7. Business card or contact card QR code
A QR code on a business card can save your contact details directly to someone's phone. The format is a vCard string:
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
FN:Your Full Name
TEL:+9198XXXXXXXX
EMAIL:yourname@email.com
ORG:Your Company
TITLE:Your Designation
URL:https://yourwebsite.com
END:VCARD
Paste this block into the QR generator. When someone scans the code, their phone prompts them to save a new contact with all these fields pre‑filled. It works on both Android and iPhone. This is far faster than handing over a card and hoping the person types your number correctly.
One thing to check before you print
After generating the QR code, scan it yourself with your phone camera or a QR scanner app. Make sure it opens the right link, chat, or payment screen. A QR code printed on a hundred wedding cards with a broken link is a headache. Test the code, then download the PNG and use it in your design. The image can be resized without losing scanability as long as it is not smaller than about 2 cm square on paper.
FAQ
Can I change the link inside a QR code after printing it?
No. A standard QR code contains the text or link directly inside the image pattern. Once printed, the destination cannot be changed. If you think the link might change in future, use a dynamic QR code service, but be aware that most dynamic QR services route through their own server and may have limits or expire. For static uses like a UPI ID, Wi‑Fi credentials, or a LinkedIn profile, a static QR code works permanently.
Does the QR code generator store my UPI ID or phone number?
No. The Toolzo QR generator runs in your browser and generates the QR image locally on your device. No data is sent to a server. This matters when you are encoding a UPI ID, a personal phone number, or a Wi‑Fi password.
Can I put a logo in the centre of the QR code?
The Toolzo generator creates a plain QR code. You can add a logo later using any image editor, but be careful: covering too much of the centre can make the code unscannable. QR codes have built‑in error correction that tolerates a small logo covering up to about 30% of the centre area. If you need a branded QR code, generate the plain code first, then overlay the logo in Canva or another design tool, keeping the logo small and centred.
