How to Calculate Marks Percentage

Guides · Calculator · Updated 2026

Whether you’ve just received your exam results or are filling out a job application, you’ll likely need to calculate your percentage of marks. The formula is straightforward — obtained marks divided by total marks, multiplied by 100 — but when you have multiple subjects with different maximum marks, a simple average can be wrong. This guide explains the right way, including an approximate CGPA conversion using the CBSE 9.5 factor.

The percentage formula

Percentage = (Total marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100

For a single subject, it’s easy: 85 out of 100 is 85%. For multiple subjects, add all the obtained marks together, add all the total marks together, and then apply the formula. Never simply average the individual percentages unless all subjects have the same maximum marks.

Step-by-step: calculate your percentage

  1. Open the Marks Percentage Calculator tool.
  2. For a single subject, switch to the Single Subject tab and enter obtained and total marks. The tool instantly shows the percentage and approximate CGPA.
  3. For a marksheet, switch to Multi‑Subject. The default 5 rows are ready — enter subject names, obtained marks, and out‑of marks for each.
  4. Click Calculate Overall %. The tool shows the overall percentage, approximate CGPA (percentage ÷ 9.5), and per‑subject percentages in cards.
  5. For a precise CGPA‑to‑percentage conversion, use our dedicated CGPA to Percentage tool.
💡 Tip: The CBSE uses the 9.5 multiplier to convert CGPA to percentage, but other boards (like state boards or universities) may use different factors. Always check your institution’s conversion rule. This calculator shows the CBSE method as a rough guide.

Worked multi‑subject example

Maths: 90/100, Science: 85/100, English: 78/100, History: 82/100, Computer: 95/100. Total obtained = 430, total maximum = 500. Percentage = (430 ÷ 500) × 100 = 86%. Approximate CGPA = 86 ÷ 9.5 = 9.05.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just average the subject percentages?

If subjects have different maximum marks, averaging individual percentages gives more weight to a subject with a smaller total. The overall percentage formula automatically weights each subject by its total marks, which is the correct academic method.

How is CGPA different from percentage?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of grade points, usually on a 10‑point scale. Percentage is a direct marks‑based figure. The 9.5 conversion factor is specific to CBSE; other boards may differ.

Can I calculate percentage for best‑of‑five subjects?

Yes — in the multi‑subject mode, simply delete the row for the subject you want to exclude, or don’t enter its marks. The tool will recalculate accordingly.

What if my marks are in grades instead of numbers?

You’ll need to convert grades to marks first using your institution’s grade‑to‑mark chart, then enter them into the calculator. Our CGPA to Percentage tool can help with that.

Is it free and private?

Yes — the tool runs entirely in your browser, free, with no sign‑up and nothing uploaded to a server.
