How to Calculate a Discount and Final Price

Guides · Shopping · Updated 2026

"30% OFF!" sounds great, but what will you actually pay? Being able to calculate a discount in your head — or with a quick tool — helps you shop smarter and avoid overspending. Here's the simple formula and how to use it.

The discount formula

Savings = Price × (Discount% ÷ 100)
Final price = Price − Savings

Example: a ₹2,000 item at 25% off → Savings = ₹500, Final price = ₹1,500.

A mental shortcut

To estimate quickly, find 10% (move the decimal one place left) and scale it. For 25% off ₹2,000: 10% is ₹200, so 25% is ₹200 × 2.5 = ₹500 saved.

Step-by-step: calculate a discount

  1. Open the Discount Calculator.
  2. Enter the original price and the discount percentage.
  3. Click Calculate to see the final price and how much you save.
💡 Tip: Watch out for "up to 70% off" signs — the biggest discount often applies to only a few items. Always check the actual price.

Stacked discounts and tax

If a coupon gives an extra 10% off an already-reduced price, apply them one after another, not by adding the percentages. And remember that GST or sales tax may be added to the discounted price — use our GST Calculator to check the final amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). A ₹1,500 item at 25% off had an original price of 1500 ÷ 0.75 = ₹2,000.

Are two 10% discounts the same as 20% off?

No. Applied one after another, two 10% discounts equal about 19% off, because the second applies to the already-reduced price.

Does the calculator add tax?

No — it shows the discounted price. Add GST separately if needed.

Can I use it for any currency?

Yes. The percentages work the same regardless of currency.

Is it free?

Yes, free and private — it runs in your browser.
